Red Sox add three to roster

by PR/Wire Report/

The Boston Red Sox added three players with the September expansion of active Major League rosters on Wednesday.

The club reinstated infielder/outfielder Eric Patterson and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the 15-day disabled list and recalled left-handed pitcher Dustin Richardson from Triple-A Pawtucket.  All three players will be active for tonight’s game at Baltimore.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Patterson, 27, has been on the disabled list since Aug. 17 (retroactive to Aug. 16) with a neck strain. He played in four rehab games with Triple-A Pawtucket, batting .235 (4-for-17) with two doubles, a triple, four runs scored and three stolen bases while appearing at second base, center field and designated hitter. Patterson has hit .254 (17-for-67) with two home runs and six RBI in 29 games with the Red Sox since being acquired from the Oakland Athletics on June 26, playing in 11 games (seven starts) in center field, 11 in left field (five starts) and seven at second base (three starts).

Saltalamacchia, 25, was placed on the DL on Aug. 19 (retroactive to Aug. 16) due to a right lower leg infection. He went 5-for-15 (.333) with two doubles, a home run and four RBI in four rehab games with the PawSox, starting two games behind the plate and two as the DH. Acquired from the Texas Rangers on July 31, Saltalamacchia went 2-for-6 (.333) with two doubles, two walks and a run scored in three games with Boston after being recalled from Pawtucket on Aug. 11. He appeared in all three games behind the plate, including two starts, throwing out one of four attempted base stealers.

The 26-year-old Richardson will be in his third stint with the Red Sox this season.  The left-hander owns a 2.61 ERA (3 ER/10.1 IP) with nine strikeouts in 19 relief appearances with Boston in 2010. In 32 games with Pawtucket this season, he went 3-0 with two saves, a 2.66 ERA (13 ER/44.0 IP) and 56 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .181 average (27-for-149).

With today’s additions, the Red Sox active Major League roster is at 28 players while the club’s 40-man roster remains at 38.
