Winterball returns for its 10th year.
Amateur baseball in Boston heats up this weekend with the 10th annual Winterball Extravaganza in Malden, Mass.
More than 100 youth and adult amateur baseball players from around Boston and across several local baseball leagues are expected to participate in the nine-inning fundraiser to benefit Toys for Tots. Since its debut in 2001, the average game temperature has been 39 degrees.
There are two games scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4 at Maplewood Park (99 Crystal St.) in Malden. Anyone interested in playing can join a roster by making a toy donation to Toys for Tots.
Game 1 for teens aged 14-17 begins at 9 a.m. (players should arrive by 8:30). Players are expected from several towns and local AAU teams, including the Saugus Silverhawks, New England Firebirds, New England Stampede and Malden Catholic.
Game 2 for adults aged 18 and older begins at noon. The managers will be Ryan Bere (of Boston Men’s Baseball League 2010 champion Blue Jays) and Rob McDonough (of the Yawkey League 2010 champion Somerville Alibrandis).
Hosted by the Boston Amateur Baseball Network, Winterball proceeds will benefit Toys for Tots for the seventh consecutive year. Toys for Tots, a program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, collects new, unwrapped toys to distribute to needy children in the community at Christmas
