Around the Region: College players earn honors

Several college baseball players with New England connections have been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District teams.
The teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and players are selected based on their combined performance on the field and in the classroom.
The University Division recognizes players at the NCAA Division 1 level, while the College Division is for players in NCAA Divisions 2 and 3, NAIA and two-year schools.
New England players honored :
District 1 University Division First Team: Yale senior pitcher Vincent Lally and Yale junior catcher Ryan Brenner.
District 1 University Division Second Team: Columbia senior pitcher Dan Bracey (East Greenwich, R.I.), Brown sophomore pitcher Heath Mayo, Fairfield senior catcher Chris Horning, Dartmouth senior outfielder Sam Bean (Needham, Mass.) and Holy Cross senior outfielder Nick Ciardiello.
District 1 College Division First Team: MIT sophomore pitcher Aric Dama, MIT senior catcher Daniel Hyatt (Wallingford, Conn.), Wheaton sophomore infielder Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H.), Worcester Polytechnic Institute senior infielder Daniel Thomas (Manchester, N.H.), Springfield senior outfielder John Schmaltz (Cromwell, Conn.) and Franklin Pierce senior DH Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass.).
District 1 College Division Second Team: Amherst senior pitcher Max McKenna (Lexington, Mass.), Western New England senior pitcher Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, Conn.), Middlebury junior catcher Zach Roeder (Keene, N.H.), St. Joseph’s (Maine) senior infielder Chris Campbell (Rochester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s senior infielder Pete Estes (Bennington, Vt.), Amherst senior outfielder Brian Merrigan (Holbrook, Mass.), Wheaton senior outfielder Hadi Raad and Eastern Connecticut State senior pitcher James Schult.
District 2 University Division First Team: Bucknell senior infielder Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass.) and La Salle senior outfielder Brendan Norton (Lanesboro, Mass.).
District 2 College Division First Team: Scranton senior infielder David Giglio (Wallingford, Conn.).
Cape Cod on the air
Cape Cod baseball is returning to the airwaves on Sunday nights for the second consecutive season.
WEEI Radio (96.3 FM) will broadcast a featured Cape Cod Baseball League game Sundays during the season. Larry Egan and John Garner, who have called Cape League games in previous seasons, return as the broadcasting duo for WEEI, the all-sports radio station on Cape Cod.

MLB Fan Cave
During the Red Sox’ visit to New York City last month, Jason Varitek and David Ortiz stopped by the MLB Fan Cave, where they hung out, filmed some video skits and shared laughs with two baseball-obsessed fans.
The MLB Fan Cave is an immersive fan experience in Manhattan and the home of MLB Dream Job winner and his wingman. Winner Mike O’Hara and wingman Ryan Wagner are watching all 2,430 regular-season games plus all playoff games while documenting their experiences on Facebook, Twitter and MLB Network.
Kansas City Royals reliever Tim Collins (Worcester, Mass.) also visited the Fan Cave on May 10 before throwing two shutout innings in his Yankee Stadium debut. …
PawSox prints
Pawtucket Red Sox radio broadcaster Dan Hoard is making the leap from Triple-A baseball to the NFL. Hoard, who is in his sixth season calling PawSox games, was named the new radio voice of the Cincinnati Bengals. Hoard, 47, will remain in the Pawtucket booth through the baseball season.
Meanwhile, Hoard’s broadcast partner, Steve Hyder (Newport, R.I.) was named the Rhode Island Co-Sportscaster of the Year for the fourth time by the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters. …
Pawtucket president Mike Tamburro was honored by the Big Brothers of Rhode Island last month with the Robert “Cy” Killian Humanitarian Award. Tamburro has hosted 22 Big Brother Nights at McCoy Stadium.
Odds and ends
A 32-year-old man accused of stealing about $25,000 worth of Red Sox memorabilia during a burglary at Fenway Park was arrested last month in New York. A press release from the office of Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota on Long Island said that Jamie Pritchard Holland (Weymouth, Mass.) has been charged with criminal possession of stolen property.
Among the items recovered were Red Sox uniforms and equipment, Kevin Youkilis’ first-base glove and Dustin Pedroia’s cleats. …
