Cape League notebook: Monda makes statement
by Ed Flaherty/
Brewster Whitecaps outfielder Jason Monda doesn’t have enough at-bats to be among the Cape Cod Baseball League leaders yet, but has certainly earned the right to pick up more playing time this summer.
Monda, who completed his freshman season at Washington State this spring, is hitting .375 as of games played July 16.
Monda has 72 at-bats for Brewster, with 27 hits. He has three doubles, four triples, one home run and 10 RBI.
Monda was named Cape League Player of the Week last week after turning in several outstanding performances for the Whitecaps.
He had two hits in all but one of Brewster’s games and was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases against Harwich.
Monda has 11 multi-hit games in 2011 and had three hits in a pair of games.
Harwich left-hander Taylor Rogers was named Cape Cod Baseball League Pitcher of the Week.
Rogers went seven innings while allowing just two hits in a 1-0 win over Orleans on July 9.
Rogers is 2-2 with a 1.73 ERA in 2011. He has a pair of shutouts to his credit.

Familiar voice
When Cape Cod residents tune their radios to WCAI on July 29 to listen to the CCBL All-Star Game, they will hear a familiar voice calling the game.
Jerry Trupiano will be the play-by-play announcer for the All-Star Game, which will be held at Fenway Park.
Trupiano was the voice of the Boston Red Sox from 1993 through 2006, joining Joe Castiglione on Red Sox broadcasts.
Trupiano will be joined by Cape League Director of Broadcasting John Garner for the All-Star Game broadcast.
Notes
►Hyannis honored former state senator Jack Aylmer prior to a recent game, naming the new field house at McKeon Park in his honor. Aylmer was a driving force behind the formation of the Hyannis Mets in the 1970s.
►Chatham first baseman Richie Shaffer (Clemson) hit home runs in three straight games last week, a rare feat in the Cape League. Shaffer led Clemson with 13 home runs and 55 RBI in 2011.
