Cape Cod League notebook: Phillips making an impact

by Ed Flaherty/

Plenty has been made of Cotuit’s Victor Roache throughout the 2011 Cape Cod Baseball League season.

The outfielder from Georgia Southern, who led all of NCAA Division 1 with 30 home runs during the 2011 college baseball season, has been among the leaders in the three Triple Crown categories for much of the 2011 CCBL season.

Roache continues to thrive on the Cape, but he isn’t alone when it comes to Triple Crown contenders in 2011.

Chatham catcher Dane Phillips (Oklahoma State) has moved into the top six in all three of the league’s prestige offensive categories – batting average, home runs and RBI.

Through games played July 30, Phillips is tied for third in batting average (.333), is tied for sixth with four home runs and is second with 27 RBI.

Roache, meanwhile, is sixth in batting average (.326), is tied for second with six home runs and leads the league with 28 RBI.

In 2011 Phillips hit .339 for Oklahoma State with four home runs and 32 RBI.

League leaders heading into the final week of the regular season include the following:

Batting average: Travis Jankowski (Bourne/Stony Brook), .342

Home runs: D.J. Hicks (Bourne/Central Florida), 7

RBI: Roache, 28

Pitching wins: Brandon Love (Brewster/Mercer), 4; Joey DeNato (Yarmouth-Dennis/Indiana), 4; Dylan Floro (Hyannis/Cal-State Fullerton), 4; Joshua Turley (Wareham/Baylor), 4; Andrew Heaney (Falmouth/Oklahoma State), 4

Strikeouts: Heaney, 46; Jon Moscot (Hyannis/Pepperdine), 46

ERA: Scott Firth (Hyannis/Clemson), 1.21

Stars shine

Offense wasn’t the main attraction at Friday night’s CCBL All-Star Game at Fenway Park as the East All-Stars defeated the West, 4-1.

The teams combined for just 10 hits, with East pitchers limiting the West to three hits.

Yarmouth-Dennis’ James Ramsey (Florida State) was named the East MVP, while Hyannis’ Eric Stamets (Evansville) was the West MVP.

Ramsey was 1-for-3 with a solo home run for the East.

Stamets had two of the West’s three hits.

Harwich’s Taylor Rogers (Kentucky) earned the win, with Orleans’ Trevor Gott (Kentucky) picking up the save.

Going deep

Chatham’s Richie Shaffer (Clemson) won the Home Run Derby at Friday night’s All-Star Game.

The contest was limited to just one round and Shaffer had six homers to seal the title.

Also competing were Brewster’s Tanner Nivins (Stony Brook), no home runs; Roache, two home runs; Hyannis’ Adam Walker (Jacksonville), three home runs); Harwich’s Austin Wilson (Stanford), one home run; and Wareham’s Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech), three home runs.

Players of the Week

Hyannis’ Jon Moscot was named Pitcher of the Week, while Chatham’s Phillips was Player of the Week last week.

Moscot (Pepperdine) was named Pitcher of the Week after allowing no earned runs in a win over Cotuit last week. Moscot scattered seven hits over seven innings and allowed only an unearned run.

Phillips had three multi-hit games last week, reached base at least once in each of his seven games, and recorded a hit in all but one. He also homered twice and drove in eight runs.

Signings

Cape League players continue to leave the league to sign pro contracts.

Last week Chatham pitcher Keith Bilodeau (Maine), a Bourne, Mass., native, left the Anglers to sign with the San Francisco Giants. Bilodeau wa a 24th-round pick in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Bilodeau was 1-1 with a 1.48 ERA with Chatham this summer.

Also, Wareham pitcher Justin Amlung (Louisville), signed with Cincinnait. Amlung was a 39th-round pick of the Reds. He was 3-1 with a 1.76 ERA with Wareham.
