Keene captures NECBL title

The Keene Swamp Bats swept the Laconia Muskrats in two games to win the 2011 New England Collegiate Baseball League championship.

In Game 2 on Wednesday, right-handed pitcher Whit Mayberry (Virginia) struck out a season-high 11 batters over six innings of work and Brett DeLoach (Georgia) hit two home runs in a 7-1 victory that sealed the title for Keene.

Eddie Medina (St. John’s) pitched the final three innings of the contest, all scoreless, to record his third save in the NECBL playoffs.

Keene’s Esteban Gomez (San Jacinto) fell a home run shy of the cycle getting a single in the first inning, an RBI triple in the fourth and a double in the eighth. The left fielder finished the night going 4-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, pacing the Swamp Bats offense along with DeLoach who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a pair of home runs and three RBI.

In Game 1, Gomez went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI as Keene defeated Laconia 10-3.
