The Harwich Mariners navigated the winding road that is the Cape Cod Baseball League season with a roster loaded with New England-bred talent, ending the ride with their second championship in three seasons and fourth under longtime manager Steve Englert (West Roxbury, Mass.).
After a 21-19 regular season, the third-seeded Mariners swept the Brewster Whitecaps and Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox -- the two teams ahead of them in the East Division standings -- in the first two best-of-three playoff rounds to reach the title series.
Standing in Harwich’s way were the Bourne Braves, who have played for the title in each of the last six summers and won three of those. The Mariners avenged a series-opening loss to win back-to-back games, including a decisive 4-2 win on Tuesday.
Whether it was at the plate, on the mound, or in the field, locals were a part of it all. Here is a look at the top local performers who contributed to Harwich’s run to another Cape League crown.
