After finishing in second place with the program’s highest win total in league play since 2005, Harvard was unable to bring home the hardware in the first-ever Ivy League Tournament last spring.
The Crimson can’t change the past, but there excitement for the 2024 season ahead even though coach Bill Decker’s (Greenfield, Mass.) roster has taken a bit of a hit in terms of overall depth as compared to recent years following the loss of 10 seniors, starting pitchers Jay Driver (Wellesley, Mass./Guardians) and Chris Clark (Angels) to the pros, and a notable season-ending injury to sophomore two-way standout Gio Colasante.
“As I told the team at our final meeting before exams (in December), this is who we’re going to be,” Decker said. “We can’t talk about not being healthy in some areas because we are who we are. It’s the same old cliche, it’s ‘next man up’ for us. It’s going to be an opportunity for some guys.”
Despite losing some depth, there is no doubt that Decker’s leaders on the mound in junior Sean Matson and reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Callan Fang will stack up with the best as they look to follow up sensational summers.
