The upcoming NCAA tournament has a new look in Division 3 this season, but the first few conference championship results in New England have significantly changed the picture.
Just as New England Baseball Journal releases its Top 10 on Wednesdays, the NCAA also came out with its final Regional Rankings before the 58-team field is released at noon on Monday. There is plenty to be decided before then as a few other teams will be sweating it out awaiting coveted at-large bids.
According to the NCAA, four of the region’s top six teams were ousted during their respective conference championships. MIT beat both Wheaton and Babson en route to winning the NEWMAC, while Mitchell was topped twice by New England College in the New England Collegiate Conference.
The weekend was less surprising in the GNAC, as Saint Joseph’s College held off a pesky Johnson & Wales squad to earn its first crown since 2014. In addition, Husson won the North Athletic Conference title and will meet CUNYAC champion Baruch in a best-of-three series this weekend for an automatic NCAA bid.
