Pitching prospects Max Meier and Nate Espelin grew up together in Belmont, Mass., and played baseball and other sports with each other throughout their childhoods.
Meier now attends Lawrence Academy and is committed to Stanford University, while Espelin now attends Winchendon as a post-graduate and is committed to the University of Dayton.
So it was a reunion of sorts last month when Lawrence hosted Winchendon in a game at Groton, Mass. Max’s parents — Shelagh and David Meier — and Nate’s parents — Laura and Chris Espelin — sat together for the thousandth time, watching their boys play the game they love.
New England Baseball Journal recently caught up with both sets of parents to talk about the process of raising successful ballplayers.
