With the go-ahead run on third base in the top of the ninth inning of the Massachusetts Super 8 Division 1 championship game, Franklin High School head coach Zach Brown knew exactly what he had to do.
With senior Steve Luttazi 90 feet from giving Franklin the lead over Central Catholic, Brown put in the call for a suicide squeeze. Senior Evan Wendell did the honors, dropping a perfect bunt down the third-base line as Luttazi sped home.
It was a tremendously risky call with so much at stake, but Brown’s decision resulted from Franklin’s mindset after the Panthers were the last team chosen for the Super 8 tournament.
