When it comes to Jeff Bagwell— a native of Killingworth, Conn., and alumnus of Xavier High School in Middletown, Conn., and product of the University of Hartford — New Englanders always have had mixed feelings. On one hand, there’s the regional pride that comes from producing one of the most fearsome hitters of his generation and arguably one of the best first basemen of all time. On the other hand, during Bagwell’s entire career, there always was that nagging feeling of what could have been had the Red Sox chosen to hold on such an immense talent.
This month, after a storied 15-year career, Bagwell at last gets to be enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a New England son. It’s a fitting time to look back on what made Bagwell such a special player by highlighting his recapping chronologically 10 of his greatest moments and accomplishments as a player.
