Connor Lane is talented enough to bring MLB scouts to a small public high school in Connecticut for a scrimmage.
That's how the spring season started for Lane this week as the 6-foot-2, 205-pound catcher began his final season at Old Saybrook High. Lane, considered Connecticut's top high school prospect this spring, is a two-time CHSCA All-State selection. He participated in the most exclusive showcase events last summer, including the Area Code Games and Summer Rivalry Classic, after a junior season in which he batted .512 with an on-base percentage of .607. His nine home runs broke the previous school record.
A UConn commit, Lane is focused on Old Saybrook's team goals this spring despite the increased attention from MLB scouts. That might mean moving from behind the plate to the mound for some pitching opportunities as the team's closer.
"I've been in conversations with some organizations," Lane said. "They still have to watch me during this high school season, and we'll see what comes from that. It's an eye-opening and cool experience. But my main focus is to help the team rebound from a rebuilding year."
