Prior to August, the Chatham Anglers had not won an Eastern Division title in the Cape Cod Baseball League since 2001. Naturally, the first Championship Series game played on Veterans Field since that year wasn’t without a mid-game burst of fog that delayed play.
But not even an infamous fog delay and suspension would hamper the Wareham Gatemen en route to a championship, as they completed a perfect sixgame postseason run with a 9-3 win over the Anglers that was broken into two parts, completed on the afternoon of Aug. 13.
The likes of UConn lefty Mason Feole (Wakefield, R.I.), Cal’s Golden Spikes Award winner Andrew Vaughn and East Carolina’s Bryant Packard were lost to the U.S. Collegiate National Team, as were others due to injury, but the grand total of 54 different players donning the Gatemen uniform made reaching a summer’s ultimate goal that much sweeter.
