With the MLB lockout in the rearview mirror, the schedule and format have been set for the 2022 MLB Draft.
The 2022 Draft will take place from July 17-19 in Los Angeles, while the Draft Combine -- a showcase for the top 300 Draft-eligible players, with the opportunity to interact with MLB general managers and scouting directors -- is scheduled for June 14-20 at Petco Park in San Diego.
This year's Draft will be 20 rounds over three days. The opening night of the Draft will feature the first two rounds: the compensatory pick rounds and the Competitive Balance rounds. Rounds 3-10 will be on Day 2 of the Draft, and Rounds 11-20 will be on Day 3.
This marks the second consecutive year in which the Draft will be held over All-Star Week in July. Historically, a 40-round Draft was held in early June around the conclusion of the college baseball season. The shift to mid-July allows more draft-eligible players to compete in summer collegiate baseball leagues like the Cape Cod League. The Draft has also been shortened from 40 rounds to 20 due to the reduction in minor league affiliates in recent seasons.
