For years, the crop of talent in the 2023 MLB Draft class was thought to be considered better than normal by New England standards.
Ever since Phillips Andover left-hander Thomas White clocked his first 90-mph fastball as an incoming freshman in 2019, the pool of New England prospects figured to include at least one first-round pick. Now that the 2023 MLB Draft is upon us, it turns out that it is, in fact, top-heavy with New England talent. Four New England players earned selections on Day 1 on Sunday night, when the draft kicked off with the first two rounds.
The four Day 1 selections equal the haul of one of the best drafts in the history of New England prospects in 2021, when Frank Mozzicato (7th overall), Sal Frelick (15th overall), Ryan Cusick (24th overall) and Josh Baez (54th overall) earned selections in the first two rounds. By comparison, last year, only one New England prospect -- UConn's Reggie Crawford (30th overall) -- earned a Day 1 selection.
Here's a look at New England's four Day 1 selections for the 2023 MLB Draft and expected signing bonuses for each player.
