All-NEBJ Prep: First Team selections for NEPSAC programs

Another prep baseball season provided plenty of excitement and outstanding individual talent spread across the Northeast. Many players rose to elite levels while elevating their respective teams.

With the assistance of coaches, New England Baseball Journal has once again put together All-NEBJ teams for 2024.

Our All-NEBJ list has been split into two posts. These team lists were not based on strength of schedule, but instead on individual performances, statistics, and noted accomplishments.

Here’s a look at the All-NEBJ First Team selections.

RHP

Ty Deperno (Postgraduate)

Salisbury School
Commit: United States Naval Academy

A Valencia, Calif., native, Deperno was solid for the Crimson Knights on the mound, going 5-0 in 39 ⅔ innings pitched. He struck out 42 and posted a 1.59 ERA. Deperno was named WNEPBL Duane Estes Pitcher of the Year.

Shaun McMillan (Postgraduate)

Williston Northampton
Commit: St. John’s University

A Freeport, N.Y., native, McMillan finished 5-1 for the Wildcats. In 44 innings, he fanned 65, with a 1.74 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and a .174 BAA. At the plate, McMillan batted .477, with a 1.274 OPS and 21 RBIs. He was named WNEPBL Cleary Division co-Pitcher of the Year.

Gavin Lyons ‘24

Hamden Hall
Commit: University of Texas

Lyons led the FAA champion Hornets by going 10-0 on the mound with a 0.82 ERA, striking out 67 in 57 innings pitched. He walked 10 and had a .930 WHIP. Lyons finished his dominant career by posting an overall 30-0 mark. He was voted team MVP, and received All-FAA honors. 

Mavrick Rizy ‘24

Worcester Academy
Commit: Louisiana State University

Rizy wrapped up a stellar career by going 6-0 with the Hilltoppers. He pitched 42 ⅓ innings, striking out 60. His ERA was 0.82, with a 0.78 WHIP and .134 BAA. He was named a CNEPSBL All-Star.

Andrew Rondini ‘24

Canterbury School
Commit: College of William and Mary

Rondini went 5-1 in 38 innings pitched, striking out 60 and posting a 1.84 ERA. He was voted First Team All-WNEPBL.

John Hegarty ‘24

St. Mark’s School
Commit: Cornell University

Hegarty finished his career by going 4-1, with a 0.19 ERA. In 36 ⅓ innings pitched, he struck out 49 opposing batters and walked only 10. He was an All-ISL selection.

Mitch Canuel ‘25

Portsmouth Abbey School

Canuel pitched 44 innings, allowing just five earned runs. His strikeout-to-walk ratio was 47:3. Canuel posted a 6-2 record with a 0.80 ERA. Offensively, Canuel led the Ravens with 16 RBI, batted .316, and stole 15 of 15 bases.

Owen Callaghan ‘25

Avon Old Farms
Commit: College of the Holy Cross

Callaghan went 5-1, with two saves. He pitched 29 ⅓ innings and finished with a 0.75 ERA, including 32 strikeouts, and walked just nine. He was named Founders League Underclass Pitcher of the Year and All-NEPSAC.

John Paone ‘25

Lawrence Academy
Commit: Duke University

Paone helped lead the Spartans to the ISL Tournament championship game. He hurled 38 ⅔ innings, going 5-1 with a 1.63 ERA. Paone also fanned 63 batters. He was named ISL Pitcher of the Year.

Gavin Wainwright ‘27

St. Sebastian’s School

Wainwright finished 5-0, posting a miniscule 0.21 ERA and .126 BAA in 32 innings pitched. Wainwright was also 2-0 with one save in postseason play. At the plate, he batted .371 with a 1.054 OPS. Wainwright was the ISL MVP.

LHP

Aiden O’Connell (Postgraduate)

Avon Old Farms
Commit: Vanderbilt University

O’Connell finished the season 7-0, with a pair of saves. In 41 innings pitched, O’Connell had a 0.00 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. He fanned 75. Offensively, he batted .361 and drove in 16 runs. He earned Founders League Pitcher of the Year.

Lukasz Rondeau ‘24

Austin Prep
Commit: University of Dayton

Rondeau played a major role in the Cougars’ 19-0 season, recording a 7-0 record. In 44 ⅓ innings pitched, Rondeau fanned 71, and finished with a 0.47 ERA, .699 WHIP, and .148 BAA. He was named team Cy Young Award winner.

Ryan Crum ‘24

Winchendon School
Commit: Salisbury University

Crum hurled 42 innings, allowing just eight earned runs for a 1.71 ERA. In addition, he tallied 40 strikeouts.

Brady Miller ‘24

Belmont Hill
Commit: Boston College

Miller tossed 31 ⅓ innings and went unbeaten on the mound, going 4-0. He finished with a 1.80 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. Miller struck out 50 opposing batters and walked just 11. He was named First Team All-ISL.

Jeremy Krendel ‘25

St. Mark’s School

Krendel pitched 19 ⅔ innings, going 3-0, with one save. He allowed just three earned runs for a 1.07 ERA, struck out 32, and walked only five. He was named to the All-ISL team.

Eion Sheehy ‘26

St. Paul’s School

Sheehy was solid on the bump for the Pelicans, finishing with a 6-0 record, a 2.03 ERA, and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 26:10 for the Lakes Region champs. Offensively, he batted .400, with a.667 slugging percentage, and 19 RBIs. He earned an All-Lakes Region selection.

Matt Conte ‘24

Dexter Southfield
Commit: Wake Forest University

Conte batted .429, driving in 12 runs, and swiping seven bases. He also scored 16 runs. He earned CNEPSBL All-Star honors.

Brady Chernovetz ‘24

Hamden Hall
Commit: Southern Connecticut State University

Named All-FAA, Chernovetz was vital in helping the Hornets win the FAA and New England Small School championships. He batted .423, collecting 38 hits and 30 RBIs, and also swiped 23 bases. Defensively, Chernovetz threw out 85 percent of would-be base stealers.

Nate Bowes ‘24

Kingswood Oxford
Commit: Sacred Heart University

Bowes batted .397, with a .493 OBP, a 1.303 OPS, and drove in 18 runs. He was team MVP as well as an All-Founders League selection. He was also named co-Founders League Player of the Year.

Ian Wirtz ‘24

Choate Rosemary Hall
Commit: Lehigh University

Wirtz batted .346, with a .485 OBP and 1.198 OPS. The Founders League co-Player of the Year drove in 19 runs and scored 14 times. He was named co-Founders League Player of the Year. 

Bradley McCafferty ‘26

Austin Prep
Commit: Duke University

In 58 at-bats, McCafferty batted .448, with a .549 OBP, and 1.187 OPS. He collected 26 hits and drove in 18 runs. 

Justin Munoz ‘26

Millbrook School

Munoz batted .500, with five home runs and 13 RBIs. He stole 13 bases and struck out just four times in 16 games. On the mound, Munoz was 2-2 with a 1.00 ERA and 28 K’s. He earned team MVP and All-WNEPBL.

Ryan Ponte ‘24

Putnam Science Academy
Commit: Central Connecticut State University

Standing 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Ponte batted .357, with a .443 OBP, and 1.086 OPS. In addition, he smacked three home runs and plated 19 runs. He earned All-NEPSAC honors.

Eddie Morrissey ‘24

Dexter Southfield
Commit; St. Lawrence University

Morrissey finished with a .393 average, 12 RBIs, and 15 runs scored. Morrissey also had three triples and six stolen bases, earning CNEPSBL All-Star honors.

John Kumpa ‘24

Kingswood Oxford
Commit: Dickinson College

Kumpa batted .392, with a .522 OBP and 1.071 OPS. He collected 20 hits and drove in 10. Kumpa struck out only four times. He is an All-FAA recipient.

Daven Allard ‘25

Lawrence Academy

Allard collected 16 hits to finish with a .421 average. He drove in six runs and scored nine times. Allard fanned just three times and also stole seven bases. Allard was named All-ISL.

Logan Sinacola ‘25

Vermont Academy

Sinacola finished with a .396 average and a .593 OBP. He collected 15 RBIs and scored 10 runs. He was named a Lakes Region All-Star and a Pi Beta Phi Award winner.

Cole Hambly ‘25

Worcester Academy
Commit: Siena College

Hambly finished the 2024 campaign with 24 hits for a .358 average, including five doubles. He recorded 20 RBIs as well. As a pitcher, he posted a 2-1 mark with a 2.47 ERA.

Myles Gythfeldt (Postgraduate)

Canterbury School
Commit: Colby College

Gythfeldt batted .386 and had an OPS of 1.018. Gythfeldt smacked 10 doubles, drove in 17 runs, and scored 26 times. He earned WNEPBL Young Division co-Player of the Year and team MVP.

Jake Harring ‘24

Austin Prep
Commit: Hofstra University

Harring finished with a .492 average. 605 OBP, and 1.419 OPS. Harring drove in 14 runs and stole 23 bases in 23 chances, earning Austin Prep team MVP.

Gavin Rigney ‘24

Deerfield Academy
Commit: St. Anselm College

Rigney batted .352 for the Big Green, collecting 21 hits total and driving in 12 runs. He committed just two errors in 76 chances. Rigney was a CNEPSBL All-Star selection.

Patrick Fitzgibbons (Postgraduate)

Marianapolis Prep
Commit: Assumption University

Fitzgibbons batted .473, with 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored. Fitzgibbons also stole 20 bases.

Tom Pender ‘25

Roxbury Latin 

Pender batted .467, with a 1.476 OPS. Pender stroked six doubles, two home runs, drove in 11 runs, and stole six bases. He earned All-ISL, ISL Silver Slugger, and was selected to Team Massachusetts for the High School Baseball National Championship Series.

Manny Carreras ‘25

Trinity-Pawling

Voted team MVP, Carreras batted .383, with a .553 OBP and 1.191 OPS. He contributed seven doubles, drove in eight, and scored 17 runs. Carreras was named Founders League Underclass co-Player of the Year. 

Tyler Harmony ‘25

Canterbury School
Commit: Northeastern University

Harmony finished with a .381 batting average, a .980 OPS along with 10 RBI. He also scored 22 runs and stole 14 bases. Harmony was an All-WNEPBL honoree. 

Lucas Sinacola ‘25

Vermont Academy

Sinacola batted .404, with three doubles and three home runs. He drove in 17 runs and had a .627 OBP and .743 slugging percentage.

Kaleb Traylor ‘26

Salisbury School
Commit: University of Missouri

Traylor maintained a .409 batting average, .529 OBP, and 1.104 OPS. He collected 27 hits, drove in 23 runs, and scored 23 times. Traylor earned All-WNEPBL honors.

Harley Goodner ‘24

Greenwich Country Day
Commit: Duke University

Goodner batted .453, with a .540 OBP and 1.212 OPS, including eight doubles. Goodner drove in 12 runs and scored 15 runs. He also swiped 15 bases. On the mound, he was 4-1, with a 0.69 ERA. He struck out 44 in 30 ⅓ innings pitched. He is an All-FAA choice.

Conor Moriarty ‘24

Deerfield Academy
Commit: Bowdoin College

Moriarty had 16 hits and walked 25 times while stealing 14 bases. Defensively, he committed just three errors in 77 chances, helping turn 26 double plays. He was named a CNEPSBL All-Star.

Brian Connolly ‘24

Winchendon School
Commit: Wake Forest University

Connolly batted .400, driving in 17 runs. He had an OBP of .478 and also stole 18 bases.

Cole Silvia ‘24

Canterbury School
Commit: Pepperdine University

Silvia finished with a .390 average and a .960 OPS. He contributed seven doubles, drove in 16, and scored 16 runs. In addition, Silvia stole nine bases. He was named All-WNEPBL and team MVP.

Ben Prince ‘25

Tabor Academy

Prince batted .486, earning him an ISL Silver Slugger Award. He posted an OBP of .571 with an OPS of 1.343. Prince stole 10 bases and committed just one error all season. He was named an ISL Underclassmen All-Star.

Amato Civitello ‘26

Hamden Hall
Commit: UConn

Civitello was a key piece for the FAA and New England Small School champs. He batted .392, adding 17 RBIs, 36 runs scored, and had a .525 OBP. In all, Civitello collected 38 hits. In addition, he stole 17 bases.

Jack Murray ‘26

Noble and Greenough School

Murray paced Nobles with a .509 average at the plate. He collected 15 RBIs and stole 10 bases. He was named team MVP and an All-ISL selection. Murray will be attending Loyola High School in Los Angeles, Calif., next year. 

Rocco DeMaio III ‘26

Hopkins School

DeMaio batted .450, with a .532 OBP, and 1.082 OPS. DeMaio recorded at least one hit in every game played. Defensively, he committed just three errors in 57 attempts. He is an All-FAA selection.

Lucas Sarno ‘27

Austin Prep

Sarno batted .471, with a .565 OBP, and 1.074 OPS. He also stole eight bases.

Ryan O’Leary (Postgraduate)

Phillips Exeter

Voted team MVP and a CNEPSBL All-Star, O’Leary wrapped up his time at Exeter with a .419 average, a .561 OBP, and .645 slugging percentage. He drove in six and crossed the plate 20 times. 

Grant Werdesheim (Postgraduate)

Choate Rosemary Hall
Commit: Princeton University

Werdesheim finished the season with a .371 average and an .861 OPS. He drove in six and scored 16 runs. Werdesheim also swiped 11 bases.

Colin Larson ‘24

Williston Northampton
Commit: Boston College

Larson batted .468, with a .560 OBP, and 1.576 OPS. Of his 22 hits, seven were doubles, and four were round-trippers. Larson drove in 12 runs, scored 22 runs, and was 5-of-5 in stolen base attempts. Larson was named WNEPBL Cleary Division Player of the Year.

Josiah Martinez ‘24

Wilbraham & Monson
Commit: Union College

An All-WNEPBL and WMA Coaches Award recipient, Martinez finished his Titans career with a .412 average and a 1.141 OPS. He also scored 10 runs.

David VanderZouwen ‘24

Austin Prep
Commit: Bentley University

VanderZouwen finished with a .375 average, a .471 OBP, and 1.042 OPS. VanderZowen had 26 RBIs and scored 17 times. He also stole 15 bases.

Gavin O’Brien ‘24

Salisbury School
Commit: UMass-Amherst

Voted WNEPBL Young Division co-Player of the Year, O’Brien batted .450, with a .593 OBP, and 1.343 OPS. O’Brien scored 20 runs and drove in 22.

Calvin Zimmerman ‘25

Pingree School

Registering 20 hits in 41 at-bats, Zimmerman finished with a .488 average, a .604 OBP, and 1.165 OPS. Zimmerman drove in 11 runs. 

Aidan Gracey ‘25

Kimball Union Academy

Gracey posted a .457 average with four doubles. He struck out just four times all season and was 9-of-9 in stealing attempts.

Ryan Ruggiero ‘26

Winchendon School

Ruggiero batted .357, contributing 17 RBIs, and scoring 25 runs. Also a pitcher, Ruggiero recorded a 2-0 mark, with one save. His ERA was 1.69.

Omar Minaya ‘26

Taft School

Minaya had a fantastic season with the Rhinos, banging out 30 hits for a .462 average. He collected 11 RBI and scored 20 times, also stealing 9 bases. Named Founders League co-Underclass Player of the Year as well as All-NEPSAC.

Connor Murphy (Postgraduate)

Worcester Academy
Commit: Boston College

In 47 at-bats, Murphy hit .404 and had a .588 OBP. He stroked six doubles, drove in 10, and crossed the plate 21 times. He earned CNEPSBL All-Star recognition.

Utility

Daniel Sullivan ‘24

St. Paul’s School
Commit: Hamilton College

Sullivan played catcher and outfield, and served as the Pelicans’ closer. He batted .392, with a .484 OBP and .686 slugging percentage. He knocked in 20 runners, scored 23 times, and stole 15 bases. As a closer, he pitched nine innings, fanning 13, and held down a 0.75 ERA. He was named Lakes Region Player of the Year.

Tony Silva ‘25

Governor’s Academy

Silva stood out as both a righty pitcher and outfielder. On the hill, he was 3-1 with a 0.97 ERA, 36 strikeouts, and a 0.872 WHIP. At the plate, he batted a robust .462 average, with a .556 OPS, and 1.285 OPS. He had 12 RBIs and 15 stolen bases, earning All-ISL honors.
