The senior leaders of Archbishop Williams carried the team throughout the season, but it was the sophomores that finished the job.
With the Bishops down a run and down to their last out against Oxford in the Massachusetts Division 4 state final, sophomore outfielder David Ryan hit a single to bring home fellow classmate Neil Sanders and force extra innings. Ryan also singled in the ninth inning to drive in the winning run to give Archies a 4-3 win and the Div. 4 state title.
It was the third extra-inning victory of the tournament for the Bishops, a team that went 11-9 on the year and 3-7 in the Central Catholic League. Led by Central Catholic League All-Stars James Dolan and Sam Hamer, the Bishops won their last seven games to pull off the unthinkable.
