A growing body oftentimes can be a hindrance for a young athlete as he tries to adjust to physical changes that can put a wrench in his development.
Already checking in at 6-foot-5, South Portland (Maine) High School junior left-hander Hunter Owen has proven the exception, with few drawbacks as he has dominated the competition over his first two seasons with the Red Riots.
“It’s a legit 6-5,” said South Portland head coach Thomas Owens, who noted that Owen’s ability to play multiple sports has helped him adjust more easily. “He’s a really athletic kid. I think that he was able to handle his body more than maybe the average teenager. He wasn’t really gawky; he was a big, strong kid.”
The South Portland ace plays basketball in the winter and also is a starter at defensive end and tight end for the football team, but when it comes down it, just give him a baseball and get out of his way.
