The story of the 2024 ISL season was a St. Sebastian’s freshman taking the league by storm.
Sebs ’27 Gavin Wainwright finished an unexpected ascent to the top of the ISL hierarchy with a historic performance in the inaugural ISL postseason tournament. He was later named ISL MVP for the 2024 season.
In St. Sebastian School’s three-game run to the championship, Wainwright collected two wins and a save on the mound. Top-seed St. Sebastian’s finished off a surprisingly dominant season with an ISL-clinching 2-0 win over second-seed Lawrence Academy in the ISL championship game at St. Sebastian’s School, marking the Sebs’ first ISL title since 2018.
A relatively unknown NEB position player heading into the season, Wainwright served as the trump card for St. Sebastian’s under first-year head coach Matt Duffy, a former big-leaguer who was once a St. Sebs ISL Player of the Year in his own right. Wainwright lifted a team that finished sixth in the ISL last year to the No. 1 seed with 28 ⅓ scoreless innings in the regular season en route to a 4-0 record and 0.00 ERA.
