When it comes to baseball in New Hampshire, Souhegan’s Beth Greenwood is in a league of her own.
The senior catcher is in her fourth year with the Amherst, N.H., high school’s baseball program, and as far as anyone can remember, one of the only girls to star in the sport in the state.
"I’ve been fortunate that I’ve had very supportive teammates," she said. "I feel like when I’m playing with the boys, there’s pressure I have to be really good 100 percent of the time and can’t make any errors or mess up. That pressure puts a lot on my shoulders. Playing with women is cool, because with the guys you feel kind of all by yourself, and you kind of are."
Bill Dod, the Sabers’ longtime baseball coach who also has helped build the programs at Bishop Guertin and Sanborn, hasn’t seen any other girls at the high school level in his 25-plus years coaching.
