Johnny Montanez will retire as a prep baseball coach after leading Brunswick School to its fifth Fairchester Athletic Association Tournament championship on Thursday with a 10-8 victory over top-seeded Hamden Hall.
One of the most successful coaches in Northeast prep school baseball history is stepping away after 13 seasons to return to New York City and work with low-income families and low-income elderly by assisting them with preventative health care.
In 13 seasons at Brunswick, Montanez's teams won seven regular-season FAA titles and five tournament championships.
"I love Brunswick and have been extremely happy here,'' said Montanez. "I have been fortunate in my 13 years here, and it has been an amazing and phenomenal ride. I will be leaving loving this place. However, the opportunity to help inner-city, underserved populations is very rewarding for me because that is how I came up living in New York.''
