While New England’s top two teams entering the season -- Boston College and UConn -- were unable to pick up victories, the weekend gone by was still fruitful for some other programs as the Division 1 college baseball season continued in March.
Maine and Massachusetts both continued the best starts for their respective programs in nearly two decades, while Rhode Island kept a winning streak going by beating in-state foe Bryant. The Black Bears’ America East rivals from UMass Lowell emerged victorious for the first time this season as they played one more regional opponent before the start of conference play.
Northeast Conference action is also set to open this coming weekend. Central Connecticut and Sacred Heart were both able to take victories out of their weekend trips to Long Island, and Merrimack picked up a win during the second weekend of an extended opening homestand.
The region’s two New England-based MAAC clubs, Fairfield and Quinnipiac, are scheduled to begin their 40-game, conference-only schedules on Saturday. Don’t forget to check out NEBJ’s Division 1 preview hub to catch up on all of our preseason content.
