Southern Maine (29-5, 12-2) enters the final day of the Little East Conference regular season needing just one win to clinch the No. 1 seed and the right to host next week’s postseason tournament, but the offensive numbers that UMass Boston has put up in recent games are quite staggering.
The Beacons (24-10, 11-3) have won nine in a row entering Friday’s home doubleheader against league newcomer Castleton (16-17, 7-7), in the midst of a nine-game winning streak. Brendan Eygabroat’s club has scored double digits in six of those games, including Monday’s 13-4 win over regionally-ranked Endicott (21-16, 9-5 CCC).
Against the Gulls, senior designated hitter Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) went 2 for 3 to extend his hit streak to 30 games.
“The top of our lineup is consistently getting on base with [senior outfielder Nick] Herzog and [New Haven, Conn., native second baseman Josh] Lopez, and I think them setting the tone has been a real key to our success getting hot over the last few weeks,” Eygabroat said. “I think our seniors are really peaking at the right time, so hopefully we can continue to play really good baseball and give ourselves an opportunity to do well in the tournament.”
