Sal Frelick has always been a fast learner. As a three-sport standout at Lexington High School, his superior high school performance led to offers to play for both the football and baseball teams at nearby Boston College.
Frelick picked baseball, although up until that point, he’d never focused on that sport more than either hockey or football. At BC, Frelick quickly found his footing as a player, carving a clear path to the majors.
After three years at Boston College, during which he batted .345 and became the first BC player ever to win a Rawlings Gold Glove (for centerfield), Frelick was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 15 pick of the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
Expectations from the Brewers were high and, suffice it to say, they have been met thus far. Frelick earned his first callup to the majors last July after spending only 2 ½ years in the minors. Frelick batted .245 in 57 games in his rookie season in 2023. Through mid-June this season, he stayed in that same range as he continued to adapt to major league pitching. It has been his stellar play in the outfield, however, that has made him somewhat of a sensation on defensive highlight reels.
