Canterbury coach Todd Mathewson has made some inroads with the UConn baseball program over the years, and Sean Stephenson seemed to be the next in the New England prep-to-Big East feeder system.
On the advice of UConn Associate Head Coach Jeff Hourigan, Mathewson became aware of Stephenson, who was looking for a postgraduate option after a fine career at Bishop Feehan (Attleboro, Mass.). The power-hitting outfielder/third baseman initially made a verbal commitment to UConn during his sophomore year at Bishop Feehan, the plan being to follow his older brother Zach (a junior outfielder with the Huskies).
Stephenson changed his mind last summer, committing instead to James Madison University (Va.).
"I first heard about Sean through Coach Hourigan,'' said Mathewson. "At the time, Sean's brother Zach was getting ready to enroll at UConn, and Sean was being recruited by UConn. Coach Hourigan called me and gave me some information about Sean and said he thought Sean would be a great fit at Canterbury for a PG year. As I started talking to Sean and his dad Rob, we realized how many connections we had in the baseball world.'
