Among our region’s three summer leagues, the Futures League is unique in that it has allowed rising college talent to get an early taste of the college game in a minor league-style setting for nearly its entire 13-year history.
Many of the region’s top players spent time in the circuit before beginning their freshman year of college. While former Boston College slugger Chris Shaw (Lexington, Mass.) was among the first highly touted locals to stop through, Milwaukee Brewers star rookie Sal Frelick (Lexington, Mass.) and another Eagle grad Emmet Sheehan (Darien, Conn.) joined the league’s list of alumni at the MLB level in 2023.
Led by two top prospects on the pitching and hitting sides, here are some of the standout freshman performances that the Futures League saw during the summer of 2023.
Be on the lookout for these players when their freshman years officially begin in the spring.
