Guttenplan notes: Recent commitments show D3 talent is getting stronger

By Dan GuttenplanOctober 29, 2021

The wave of commitments to Division 3 programs is starting to churn as the Class of 2022 continues to go through the college selection process.

If this week's D3 commitments are any indication, the pandemic's effect on college baseball will result in an increased talent pool at the D3 level.

Two of New Hampshire's top uncommitted pitchers in the Class of 2022 -- Kyan Bagshaw of Souhegan High and Thomas Rioux of Pinkerton Academy -- gave commitments to D3 programs this week. Bagshaw, a 2021 First Team All-New Hampshire Division II selection, will continue his career at Endicott College. Rioux, a 2021 First Team All-New Hampshire Division I selection, will play at Colby College.

Each of the NH Prospects pitchers was considered a borderline D1 talent at the start of the pandemic. Each has mid-80s fastball velocity and a complementary pitch mix. Each has a projectable body type -- Bagshaw as a 6-foot, 170-pound lefty and Rioux as a 6-foot, 220-pound righty. This fall, Rioux earned Showcase League Pitcher of the Year honors.
