While circumstances have drastically changed throughout baseball -- and the overall world around us -- over the past week or so, the goal did not for Tim Mayo and his team at Nichols College.
The coronavirus pandemic began making its mark on Division 3 athletics last Thursday with conferences and colleges nationwide beginning to suspend or completely cancel their entire seasons. All the while, the Bison were preparing to depart for their annual spring break set in Auburndale, Fla. They still had baseball games to play.
Upon arriving in Florida, though, the Bison’s season had already been cut short. Mayo passed along the news that the Commonwealth Coast Conference season had been canceled prior to Friday morning’s practice, but the team would not be deterred during its final days together.
“Our school was literally meeting every day and it felt like things changed every 30 minutes, so we didn’t even know if we were going to get on the bus to go that day,” Mayo, the second-year head coach and Springfield graduate, said. “They let us stay on course, get down there and play a little more baseball.”
