The 2022 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament will kick off this weekend. The lowest-seeded teams will play preliminary round games before the top seeds take the field early next week.
To review last year's results, Xaverian Brothers took home the Division 1 championship after running through a gauntlet of contenders like Leominster, St. John's Prep, Franklin, Taunton and Braintree. In D2, St. Mary's of Lynn earned a championship by knocking off powerhouse schools like Hopkinton, Masconomet and North Andover.
The Division 3 race needs context because this year's favorite, Austin Prep, got knocked out in the quarterfinals despite being the No. 1 seed. Undefeated AP (20-0) will have to get through last year's D3 champion Taconic and D3 finalist Medfield to finish off an undefeated season. The Division 4 and Division 5 tournaments won't require as much context since this is the inaugural year for the D5 tournament. Most of last year's D4 schools have been split into the two lower divisions.
Here's a look at the favorites in each of the five MIAA divisions as well as players to watch.
