Mike Glavine thrives by focusing on tough New England players

By Dan GuttenplanOctober 1, 2018

Northeastern baseball coach Mike Glavine went home to visit his parents in Billerica, Mass., in 2014, and his father, Fred, quickly found time to tell his son how to do his job.

There was a local kid making headlines on the diamond playing at Mike’s alma mater, Billerica High. Fred wanted his son to see him play.

"Dad’s telling me about him," Mike Glavine said." ‘There’s this kid in town, everybody’s talking about him.’ Sometimes, you might not get a call about a kid, and you need to rely on your dad."

Glavine eventually scouted the local Billerica kid, Kyle Murphy, and made him an offer to join his program. Murphy, a 6-foot-2 redshirt junior, is expected to fill a role on the Northeastern pitching staff this season.
