A season unlike any other has come to an end for all of New England’s Division 1 college baseball teams.
The action spanned into late Sunday as Fairfield completed its Cinderella run in the Austin Regional Final. The Stags capped a one-loss regular season with the best winning percentage in NCAA history, earning a national ranking and rising to No. 1 in the RPI rankings in the midst before falling in the MAAC Championship and earning the conference’s first-ever at-large bid.
Fairfield wasn’t the region’s only club writing some history this spring, as Northeastern put together a 20-game win streak during the regular season and then punched its Big Dance ticket automatically as first-time CAA champions.
UConn and Central Connecticut finished last weekend as conference champions again and fought until the end in their respective regionals. The back-to-back NEC winners took a perennial powerhouse program to extra innings before bowing out of the national tournament.
