Now that the calendar has flipped to August, the NECBL opened its eight-team postseason and the chase for the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup on Monday night when four best-of-three wild-card round series kicked off.
The Newport Gulls finished the summer running away with the No. 1 seed and second straight Coastal Division title, with the in-state rival Ocean State Waves clinching the final spot that gives them the right to face off in the opening round.
The other two division titles went to the Vermont Mountaineers and Valley Blue Sox. The summer watch list spotlights one New England player from each of the playoff teams:
