East Catholic High (Manchester, Conn.) baseball coach Martin Fiori was eating dinner in his kitchen last week with a nationally televised game between the Dodgers and Astros on in the background.
Dodgers $100 million pitcher Trevor Bauer was on the mound, and yet the ESPN broadcast team couldn't help but discuss East Catholic's top pitcher.
Apparently, four consecutive no-hitters will command the attention of baseball enthusiasts at every level. East Catholic ace Frank Mozzicato, who won't turn 18 until the middle of this month, delivered that very feat. Opposing hitters went 0-for-the-month-of-May against Mozzicato; he last allowed a hit in an April 26 shutout of his team's rival, Manchester High.
Mozzicato is expected to put his no-hitter streak on the line this afternoon when top-seeded East Catholic takes on No. 32 Windham Tech in the first round of the Class M Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament. If Mozzicato's last few starts are an indication, expect dozens of MLB scouts behind the backstop for the 3:30 p.m. start.
