Chris Lanzilli never expected to be in this situation. On the day after the 2021 MLB Draft came to a close, he started the day by posting a video of himself taking swings in a batting cage.
"Looking for an opportunity to play at the next level. DM for contact info," Lanzilli wrote.
It's a far cry from what Lanzilli expected following a prolific college career at Wake Forest. The Stoneham, Mass., native and Dexter School graduate was one of the ACC's most productive power hitters over the last four years, tallying a career batting average of .298 with 42 home runs, 46 doubles and 147 RBI over 170 games.
Still, 24 hours after the conclusion of the 2021 MLB Draft, Lanzilli had yet to receive a sniff from an MLB team looking to sign the outfielder as an undrafted free agent.
