When Tommy McAndrews arrived on the Phillips Academy campus three years ago, he was a virtual unknown. The Haverhill (Mass.) product entered the distinguished preparatory school as a freshman, and spent his first baseball season as a member of the Big Blue junior varsity squad.
Due to the lost 2020 season, Phillips head coach Kevin Graber had yet to be given an opportunity to see McAndrews' on-field abilities up close and personal. However, all of that changed considerably over the past couple of months.
"He is now our starting catcher and he is really, really good," Graber said. "We've had some quality Division 1-bound catchers here, and I hoped Tommy could capably slide into the role of starting catcher, but I'd be lying if I said I knew he was this good. From receiving, throwing, hitting, base-running and intangibles, Tommy is the real deal."
