The latest edition of The Base Path Podcast takes an in-depth look at the Fall 2022 issue of New England Baseball Journal.
Co-hosts Dan Guttenplan and Matt Feld discuss the rise of travel baseball in New England. Feld is uniquely qualified to take an objective look at the travel ball industry as a longtime journalist as well as a coordinator of operations for Nor'Easters Baseball out of Tewksbury, Mass.
Feld wrote a story in the fall edition in which he estimated that the average annual cost of travel baseball is upwards of $12,000 for high school players.
"This is a huge concern of mine," Feld said. "When it comes to club baseball and the cost that's now become associated with it, it gives ammunition for the bad reputation that has come with travel. When you add it all up, the total estimated expenses for a family might be $12,000, and that might even be on the low end.
