Podcast: BC recruiting coordinator Kevin Vance on 21-7 start

Our most recent podcast guest has an insider’s pass to Boston College’s historically strong start to the 2023 season.

BC recruiting coordinator Kevin Vance joined hosts Dan Guttenplan and Matt Feld to share his insights on the Eagles’ 21-7 start, which has resulted in a top-10 national ranking in both D1Baseball and Baseball America polls.

“I’d say you could really start to see that coming toward the end of the fall and the preseason,” Vance said. I think a lot of it was we put a lot of pressure on them this fall and in the preseason. We made it a lot more competitive and pushed them a little bit to compete.”

“What comes with that is them coming together through it. I would say that was probably a big difference for us — being harder on them and holding them accountable for all those little things.”

A big part of BC’s first-half success can be attributed to a trio of D3 graduate transfers. Former Roger Williams pitcher Chris Flynn (Naugatook, Conn.) has a record of 6-1 with a 1.76 ERA, while Salve Regina graduate transfer Andrew Roman (Monson, Mass.) serves as the reliever in the highest leverage spots. Second-year Babson graduate transfer Henry Leake is the Friday starter.

“The recruiting philosophy hasn’t changed much,” Vance said. “I think it’s something that we’ll continue to do, for sure. I think we’ll fill a few spots every year. We’ll never be a full turnover. We’ll just reload with a couple of and a couple of bats basically.

“We’ll always save spots for the high school side. We’ll make sure we’re not overrecruiting because we’re trying to do things the right way and not have a surplus of guys going into the transfer portal.”
