Podcast: Coach Steve Lomasney on WWBA World Championship

The most recent guest on The Base Path Podcast is the founder of The Show New England travel program. Steve Lomasney. The former Red Sox prospect will coach the Red Sox Scout Team at the WWBA World Championship in Fla., on Columbus Day weekend.

A Peabody High baseball legend, Lomasney coached the Red Sox Scout Team, comprised mostly of New England prospects, to the Round of 16 in three of the last four seasons.

“We have a lot of good, talented players up in the Northeast that play in a lot of really good travel programs,” Lomasney said. “They might not get the exposure of some of these other guys nationally, but we’re confident in their ability to compete. I love bringing those guys down. We’re in every game. We’ve won our pool three times in the last four years.

“I’m looking for the intangibles,” Lomasney continued. “I want guys who are super competitive. When they go out there, you can’t take your eyes off them, for some reason. Those are the guys I gravitate towards, and I’m excited about the roster we have.”

As the director of The Show New England travel program, Lomasney has also experienced the shift in college recruiting over the last few seasons. He has found it more difficult to get players recruited out of high school.

“Now, because of the environment that you’re in and and the transfer portal, I push more guys to go mid-major,” Lomasney said. “Get on the field, and play as much as you want. Honestly, if I heard myself say that 10 years ago, I would probably punch me in the face for saying it. But it’s the environment that they’re in.

“I don’t like it,” Lomasney continued. “I’m a big believer in loyalty and building a culture from the ground up with everyone being a part of something. Unfortunately, right now, it’s a lot of hired guns. And there’s a lot of money out there right now for any college athlete.”
