Five D1 teams from New England will kick off their NCAA Tournament bids for a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., today.
The latest guest on The Base Path Podcast, Baseball America college baseball analyst Peter Flaherty, helps us recap the D1 season and look ahead to the NCAA Regional assignments for Boston College, UConn, Northeastern, Central Connecticut State and Maine.
Flaherty feels BC was worthy of hosting a regional on its Chestnut Hill campus.
“I think they were 100 percent deserving of one,” Flaherty said. “The Northeast hasn’t hosted a regional (since 1991). Putting that narrative aside, you’re looking at a team with 35 wins, 16 wins in the ACC. They’ve got 20 wins against top 100 RPI teams, including 13 against the top 50. Their RPI was sitting at 18th, which is in the range that you want to be in when you’re talking about hosts. A Power Five team in that range is more or less a slam dunk to be a host.”
