The latest guest on The Base Path Podcast is one of New England’s top prep prospects in the Class of 2024 – a 6-foot-9 right-handed pitcher from Worcester Academy, Mavrick Rizy.
After de-committing from UConn in late June, Rizy ascended to the top of the list of uncommitted ’24s in the entire country. This summer, he served as the ace of the Team Massachusetts staff at the GEICO High School National Championships in June before earning invitations to the East Coast Pro Showcase and Area Code Games.
Rizy explained his decision to de-commit from UConn and reopen his recruitment.
“It’s definitely a really hard decision,” Rizy said. “I had such a strong relationship with Coach (Jim Penders) and Coach (Josh) MacDonald. With Coach MacDonald recently looking at new jobs and potentially getting a head job, it made me question myself, like whether that was truly home for me after committing at such a young age. So, I had a really great conversation with Coach MacDonald. He was very transparent with me, very open, very honest, and I decided it was best to reopen and hopefully find a new home in the next couple months.”
