The latest edition of The Base Path Podcast takes a deep dive into the Massachusetts high school baseball season, as MIAA analyst Pat Donnelly reflects on the first half of the season.

Host Dan Guttenplan and Pat Donnelly discuss the teams that have stood out in each division of the MIAA and make predictions for the second half and postseason.

“I think BC High is one of those teams that’s been as advertised,” Donnelly said. “Nobody’s really been able to touch that pitching staff so far. Four no-hitters is pretty insane so far this early in the season, Liam Kineen has been fantastic. He had a no-hitter against St. John’s Prep last week. He and Brody Beale combined for a no-hitter against Taunton.

“At the plate, it’s been Cole Bohane picking right up where he left off as the reigning Catholic Conference MVP. So, they’re firing on all cylinders. They had their first loss this week against St. John’s Shrewsbury — another one of those teams as good as advertised.”

Donnelly predicted that the three teams currently at the top of the MIAA power rankings in the top three divisions — BC High (D1), Walpole (D2), and St. Mary’s of Lynn (D3) — will finish their respective seasons with state championships.

“It’s a cop-out, but I’m going with the top seeds,” Donnelly said. “Walpole has beaten Braintree, King Philip, Mansfield, and St. John’s Prep. Even their losses have been close. I think what they’ve been able to do with a really strong schedule bodes well for them.”
