Kellan Heney's decision to transfer to Governor's Academy has been a game-changer in his life.
Standing 6-foot-3, 180-pounds, Heney is regarded as one of the top left-handed pitchers in New England. He chose to enroll at Governor's Academy a year ago as a reclassified junior.
Heney, who hails from Manchester by the Sea, Mass., believes the additional year of prep school gave him time to secure an offer to play D1 college baseball at University of Richmond.
"The pandemic really changed up the public school system, and we began to notice that many top athletes across our area began looking deeper into private schools, even though their town school systems were well-regarded,'' said Heney. "I also was a couple of years into my recruitment process for baseball and fully realized that many of the Division 1 rosters were overflowing with their own student-athletes because of the extra year of eligibility. Many programs were looking to the transfer portal to fill spots.''
