Omar Minaya's adjustment to Taft School was all-encompassing after his transfer from Notre Dame School in the Dominican Republic in 2023.
Born and raised in Santo Domingo, Minaya managed to overcome a language barrier while acclimating himself on the Watertown, Conn., campus.
"In a boarding school like Taft, I have the opportunity to go to school, a gym, a baseball field, and a library all in one place,'' said Minaya, a junior outfielder with the Rhinos. "In my time at Taft, I have developed as a person and student-athlete. Since English was my second language with Spanish being my first, classes became harder and harder, but as time went by, my English evolved and it has become much better. This school has taught me how to manage my time efficiently, prioritize what is important, and balance an academic and athletic schedule.''
Minaya feels his enrollment at Taft was "a must" if he wanted to attain his goal of playing baseball at the collegiate level. Minaya understood the standard of academics and athletics expected at the college level most closely resembled the prep school expectations.
