At 5-foot-8, 150 pounds, Sam Castro patrols the middle infield for Hamden Hall, primarily at shortstop. Last season, Castro batted .427 and tied for the team lead in hits with 35. He also flashed some rare power for his size with three home runs, seven doubles, and a 1.101 OPS.
Newly appointed head coach Mike Perry began worked with Castro since the shortstop came over from Brien McMahon High in 2024. Since Castro's arrival, Perry has seen growth academically and athletically.
"Sam is a highly motivated student-athlete,'' Perry said. "His maturity and desire to learn were clear from the moment we were in contact, and he wanted to join Hamden Hall. Sam has excelled in the classroom and has been a great role model throughout the school. I've coached a lot of talented players throughout my time here, and Sam is one of a handful of players who continuously display a strong work ethic.''
Castro has played travel ball with RodSwings Select 18U (Brookfield, Conn.) and The Clubhouse CT (Fairfield, Conn.). He lends praise to Mike Porzio and Joe Zangi with The Clubhouse as being prime mentors early in his career. Matt Rodriguez (RodSwings) has played a key role in Castro's development, especially on the hitting side.
