For those wishing to pursue a career at the next level, the focus on excellence must go far beyond the diamond.
At New England’s premier baseball programs from conferences like the ACC and Ivy League, a high level of play also comes with stringent academic standards. Those academic standards, perhaps more of an afterthought in other parts of the country, are at the forefront of the recruiting landscape throughout the Northeast.
"We look at someone's academics right away," Holy Cross coach Ed Kahovec said. "We want to make sure we're being efficient with who we are going to see, so we are asking for academics right off the bat before making a trek to see someone who could potentially talent-wise fit our mold."
Holy Cross is far from alone amongst those schools who look at grades to quickly filter down a list of potential recruits. Harvard, Brown, and Yale's academic requirements speak for themselves based on their Ivy League pedigree. While GPA is circled early, analyzing someone's academic standing goes far beyond their grades on a handful of science tests.
