Robby Scott had just finished his college baseball career at Florida State and wasn’t sure what was next. At that time, the thought that he would one day emerge into a top-flight lefty specialist for the Boston Red Sox seemed about as realistic as winning the lottery.
After all, Scott wasn’t even used regularly in college. The 2011 MLB draft came and went without anyone selecting Scott.
"I had to start thinking about what else I was going to do. I was teaching summer school at my high school, teaching physical education, with my phone in my pocket, just waiting for it to start ringing," Scott said. "I didn’t give up the dream though. I still had baseball in my head. I was still working out every day, still getting after it, just hoping and waiting for a phone call."
