Scouting report on New England’s summer showcase standouts

UConn-bound Adrian Siravo and BC-bound Joe Vetrano stand out at East Coast Pro Showcase

By Dan GuttenplanAugust 7, 2019

The Boston Red Sox Northeast team went 2-2 at the East Coast Pro Showcase in Hoover, Ala.

Eight of New England’s top high school prospects are in the midst of the most important stretch of their respective summers, with two of the most prestigious high school national showcase events taking place in early August.

Five of New England’s top high school prospects for the 2020 MLB draft competed in the East Coast Pro Showcase on Aug. 1 to 4 in Hoover, Ala. Three of those players and three other New Englanders currently are in the midst of showcasing their skills at the Area Code Games (through Friday) in Long Beach, Calif.

Boston Red Sox Northeast area scout Ray Fagnant — one of the most influential scouts in New England — managed the Boston Red Sox Northeast team at the East Coast Pro Showcase. That squad went 2-2 against regional teams from all across the country. Fagnant also is on the coaching staff for the Northeast regional team at the Area Code Games.

“The Red Sox support me being involved with this because it’s such a great resource for getting to know these guys,” Fagnant said. “A lot of scouts will be seeing these kids for the first time next spring, but I’ll have gotten a chance to see them play in pressure situations and spend some time with each of them off the field. It’s a lot of fun, and we’re having a great time getting to know each other.”
