At this time a year ago, Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) thought he was in his final weeks on the diamond as he completed his Master’s degree at Southern Connecticut State University.
Then, uncertainty struck again.
“We had his senior shirt framed and thought it was done,” Southern head coach Tim Shea said. “Mike took a ball off the ankle in (his second at-bat of) our first game and was out until the last week of the season. We thought it was over because we weren’t sure of the COVID rules at the time, how many games you had to play to get a year back.”
A 6-foot, 190-pound catcher, DeMartino was able to finish off his sixth season of college ball on the field, playing in the Owls’ final four games last May.
