Stonehill coach on D1 move: ‘I led the league’ in asking for it

Stonehill College baseball coach Pat Boen will no longer have to try to convince his athletic director to make the move to Division 1.

Stonehill Athletic Director Dean O'Keefe has always been on the same page, and now he got it done. Stonehill College announced on Tuesday that it accepted an invitation from the Northeast Conference's (NEC) Council of Presidents and will begin a transition to offer NCAA Division I athletics starting with the 2022-23 academic year.

"This is awesome; I'm so excited," Boen said. "I just spoke with my AD, and he said that if there was an NCAA record for the number of times a school has inquired about moving to D1, we would hold the record. I led the league in asking for this. Timing is everything, and when Bryant announced its move to America East, it opened a spot for us in the NEC."

Bryant University accepted an invitation on March 29 to join the America East Conference, effective July 1, 2022. The Bulldogs had been a member of the NEC since 2009.
